Hi, I'm Fame Ketover of Lenguin.com and this is Mandarin Chinese. So in the last lesson we learned about nationalities. This is a plus lesson meaning, you'll put to use what you learned, as well as learn the Chinese characters.
Listen to this conversation.
Repeat the word for "country".
Try repeating the word for "America" (as in United States of America).
Now try repeating the word for "person".
Now try repeating "an American" (or "America person"), "Měiguo" plus "rén". Notice that "guó"
does not have its full tone here.
Try saying "an American" and repeat after the speaker.
Repeat the answer "I'm an American" in the exchange.
Now answer "I'm an American" ahead of the second speaker.
Imagine the following phone conversation between two unacquainted speakers.
Try repeating the word for "China".
Now repeat "a Chinese person" or a "China person".
Try repeating the answer "I am not Chinese" in the exchange.
Now try answering "I am not Chinese" ahead of Mr. King.
Now listen to this live exchange which establishes the nationality of Miss Hu and Mr. Ma.
So apparently, both Miss Hu and Mr. Ma are Chinese. Remember that Mr. King is an American. Now take the part of Mr. King and answer Miss Hu's questions ahead of him,
using the negative when a appropriate.
In the following live exchange, notice the use of the short answer "shì" and "bú shi",
which we translate "yes" and "no" before the full answers.
Now try to answer Miss Hu's questions ahead of Mr. King, starting your answers with "shì" or "bú shi".
You've listened to and replied to a bunch of yes/no questions with "ma". So now, let's see if you can ask them.
Try asking, "Are you an American?"
How about, "Is she Mrs. Ma?"
So basically the formula is: take a statement like: "Tā shi Zhōngguo rén." and add "ma". "Tā shi Zhōngguo rén ma?." and you make the question.
